Lithuanian Government rejects Regitra vehicle inspection reminder mandate
The Lithuanian Government has rejected a legislative proposal that would mandate Regitra to notify vehicle owners via SMS or email five working days before their mandatory technical inspection expires. The amendment, initiated by Member of Parliament Viktoras Fiodorovas, aimed to prevent drivers from forgetting inspections, thereby avoiding fines and potential financial losses in the event of accidents.
The Ministry of the Interior argued that the mandate is unrelated to Regitra’s core functions, as the agency does not perform inspections, set inspection procedures, or manage inspection data. Furthermore, the Ministry noted that Regitra does not collect the necessary phone numbers or email addresses during vehicle registration, meaning new systems would need to be integrated.
Implementing this service would require approximately 20,000 EUR for Regitra’s IT systems and at least 15,000 EUR for the Centralized Technical Inspection Data Base. Annual messaging costs are estimated at 80,000 EUR. Since these costs would not be covered by the state budget, the Government warned that they might lead to increased service fees for users. Currently, technical inspection companies and the Lithuanian Technical Inspection Companies Association already offer optional reminder services that can be requested online.
