Lithuanian vehicle inspection regulatory developments
Overview
The Lithuanian government is evaluating various legislative changes regarding vehicle technical inspections. The Seimas has considered amendments to the Law on Safe Traffic of Vehicles on Roads to tighten inspection protocols. These proposed changes would allow for extraordinary inspections if errors, faulty equipment, or inspector mistakes are discovered, potentially resulting in the cancellation of a vehicle’s inspection status if owners fail to comply within one month.
Separately, the government rejected a proposal to mandate that Regitra notify vehicle owners of upcoming inspection expirations via SMS or email. While the amendment sought to help drivers avoid fines and accident-related financial losses, the Ministry of the Interior argued the mandate was outside Regitra’s core functions. Officials also cited concerns regarding the integration of contact data and the financial burden, noting that the estimated annual messaging costs of 80,000 EUR could lead to increased service fees for users.
