Lithuanian municipalities increase funding for civil protection and shelters

Lithuanian municipalities are increasing investments in civil protection and emergency preparedness. Vilnius Municipality has announced a 1 million euro program to improve shelters. The funds will be used for three main purposes: ensuring access to shelters, installing window protection, and assisting with applications for the Ministry of the Interior’s shelter expansion programs.

Eligible applicants include apartment owner associations, as well as state or municipal institutions. The maximum funding per object is 20,000 euros including VAT. The municipality plans to launch the first call for applications in September.

In Visaginas, a contract worth 120,000 euros has been signed between the Ministry of the Interior and the Visaginas Municipality to strengthen collective protection. Funded by the State Defense Fund, the project aims to upgrade an evacuation point at the Draugystės progimnazija. The facility is intended to accommodate up to 800 people and is expected to be completed by April 2027.
