Lithuanian security and civil protection funding

Overview

Lithuanian security and civil protection agencies are seeking increased financial resources to bolster national preparedness.

In early August, several departments, including the Police Department and the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), requested nearly €350 million in additional funding from the Ministry of the Interior for the upcoming state budget. These requests aim to address rising wage costs, recruitment challenges, and the need for modernized equipment and border-monitoring systems. Specifically, the Police Department requested €168.7 million, while VSAT estimated a requirement of €252.4 million, needing an extra €134.5 million.

By late August, focus expanded to municipal-level investments in civil protection. Vilnius Municipality announced a €1 million program to improve shelter access and protection, while the Visaginas Municipality signed a €120,000 contract, funded by the State Defense Fund, to upgrade an evacuation point capable of accommodating 800 people.
