Electric scooter safety concerns rise in Lithuania and Poland
Authorities in Lithuania and Poland are raising alarms over the misuse of electric scooters and the emergence of high-speed modified micro-mobility vehicles. In Lithuania, reports highlight a rise in heavy-duty electric scooters capable of reaching speeds of 75 km/h. Such devices often bypass legal classifications, as standard electric scooters are limited to a 25 km/h design speed and 1 kW power. High-speed incidents, including attempts to evade police, pose significant safety risks to both riders and pedestrians.
In Poland, law enforcement is conducting intensive inspections to monitor technical conditions, speed compliance, and sobriety among scooter and single-track users. There is growing concern regarding users removing factory speed limiters, allowing vehicles to reach speeds of 60 km/h in urban areas. Current Polish regulations limit electric scooters to 20 km/h, and police are emphasizing the need for better control and public education to prevent accidents in high-traffic pedestrian zones.
