Lithuania's Via Lietuva begins major road upgrades

Lithuanian road operator Via Lietuva announced two large‑scale renovation programmes. The first will modernise 43.4 km of state‑road sections that run through towns in 39 municipalities, with about €10 million allocated and work scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas said the upgrades will improve safety and comfort for residents travelling to work, schools and medical facilities.

The second programme targets the A1 highway, the main Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda corridor. Nearly 38 km of the route between Babtai and Ariogala will be reconstructed in two phases from 2026 to 2027 under a contract worth roughly €39 million. AB Kauno tiltai will carry out the work, which includes resurfacing, viaduct and bridge repairs, and will be staged to minimise disruption. Drivers are urged to plan trips in advance and follow temporary traffic signs. Via Lietuva’s director Martynas Gedaminskas highlighted that the projects will extend the lifespan of the infrastructure and reduce noise and pollution for local communities.
