Liverpool to top up Arne Slot's salary for Netherlands coach role

Liverpool FC said it will supplement the salary of former manager Arne Slot if he takes the Netherlands national‑team head‑coach job. The club plans to top up his pay for the first year to the amount he would have earned under his existing contract, which runs to summer 2027, thereby preventing a financial loss for the 47‑year‑old and saving Liverpool millions of euros.

Slot was dismissed by Liverpool in May 2026 after two seasons, the first of which delivered a Premier League title. His contract was worth about €8 million in the first year and is estimated at roughly €30 million in total. The KNVB is under pressure to appoint a successor to Ronald Koeman before the Nations League match against Germany on 24 September, and Slot is the leading candidate. The arrangement differs from the usual practice when a manager joins a rival Premier League club, where the new employer would normally cover the compensation.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Liverpool’s willingness to fund part of Slot’s salary aims to ease the transition and reduce the club’s future payout obligations.
