Liverpool FC re-appoints Julian Ward as sporting director

Liverpool FC has officially re-appointed Julian Ward as the club’s sporting director. Ward, 45, succeeds Richard Hughes, who recently departed to join the Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

This marks Ward’s second tenure in the role; he previously served as sporting director during the 2022-23 season before stepping down. Most recently, he held the position of technical director for Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club’s ownership. Ward’s history with Liverpool dates back to 2012, when he initially joined the organization to work in scouting and player development.

FSG President Mike Gordon stated that Ward’s extensive experience and deep understanding of the club make him the ideal candidate to lead football operations. The appointment is intended to provide continuity and support for head coach Andoni Iraola during a period of structural transition at Anfield. Ward expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him, noting his familiarity with the club’s ambitions and culture.
