Julian Ward re-appointed as Liverpool sporting director

Overview

Liverpool FC has officially re-appointed Julian Ward as sporting director, succeeding Richard Hughes, who departed to join Al-Hilal. Ward, 45, returns to the role he previously held during the 2022/23 season after serving as technical director for Fenway Sports Group (FSG). His return follows FSG’s sale of a nearly 40% stake in the club to a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos.

Ward’s appointment aims to “enhance football operations and provide necessary support to head coach Andoni Iraola” during a period of structural transition. Regarding squad reinforcement, Ward has been linked to triggering a €55 million buy option for Ronald Araujo, though high wages remain a complication. The club has also maintained interest in Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni, AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara, Neco Williams, and Tyrick Mitchell.

Expanding on his recruitment strategy, Ward is reportedly developing strategic partnerships with European clubs to improve player development. This initiative focuses on establishing formal relationships to ensure young prospects are sent on structured loans to settled environments rather than being distributed to random teams. By building these connections, the club aims to position itself at the front of the queue for emerging global talents. This approach follows recent recruitment patterns involving high-potential players like Rio Ngumoha and Giovanni Leoni. Additionally, Liverpool is monitoring talent from clubs such as Como, including potential targets Nico Paz and Jacobo Ramon, as part of a strategy to sign players before they reach peak market value.
