Liverpool FC sells 30% stake to Jeff Bezos-led consortium
Liverpool FC has entered a definitive agreement to sell a 30 per cent minority stake to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. The deal, valued at approximately £1.65 billion (US$2.24 billion), places the club’s total valuation at roughly £5.5 billion.
Prominent investors within the 1892 Holdings group include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, via K5 Global, and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, through his family office EE Capital. The Mittal Family Trusts are also involved. While the consortium acquires a significant minority position, existing owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) will retain majority ownership and maintain full operational control of the club.
As part of the restructuring, Amit Bhatia will join the club’s board as vice-chairman. Other board additions include Bryan Baum and Elaine Saverin. Although FSG insists this is not an exit strategy, reports indicate the agreement includes a mechanism that could allow the consortium to purchase a controlling stake within the next 12 months.
The investment has drawn mixed reactions. While framed as a strategic move for long-term growth, some supporters and political figures have expressed concerns regarding Amazon’s labor practices and the potential for the club to become a mere asset in a billionaire’s portfolio.
