Liverpool FC minority stake talks
Entities: Eduardo Saverin · Amit Bhatia · Yan Diomande · Mohamed Salah · Liverpool Football Club
Overview
Fenway Sports Group confirmed on 21 July 2026 that it is holding preliminary talks with a consortium led by British‑Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, son‑in‑law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, to sell a strategic minority stake in Liverpool FC. The consortium seeks up to 30 % of the club, valuing Liverpool at roughly £4.5 billion ($6 billion). An initial offer of about £1.35 billion for a 30 % share has been reported, though no agreement has been reached. Bhatia stepped down from his co‑ownership role at Queens Park Rangers and transferred his shares to co‑owner Ruben Gnanalingam to avoid a conflict of interest.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was approached and, as of 22 July, entered talks with Bhatia about joining the consortium. On 23 July, sources reiterated that the provisional offer remained around £1.35 billion (≈$1.8 billion) for a 30 % stake, valuing the club at more than $6 billion, but Bezos has not yet confirmed participation.
By 26 July, the consortium had also approached Facebook co‑founder Eduardo Saverin about a similar 30 % purchase, expanding the pool of potential U.S. investors. The outreach coincided with a disappointing season for Liverpool—£450 million in summer signings failed to deliver the expected results, the club exited the Champions League in the round of 16, finished fifth in the Premier League and saw Mohamed Salah depart. Despite the on‑field setbacks, Fenway Sports Group remains open to a minority investment while retaining majority control.
