Liverpool's Richard Hughes praised for transfer decisions

Former Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is receiving praise for his recent transfer decisions, specifically regarding the retention of Cody Gakpo. While Hughes oversaw significant spending during his tenure, his decision to reject a major offer from Manchester City for Gakpo has proven successful as the Dutchman has recorded two goals and four assists in five games under manager Andoni Iraola.

This decision contrasts with the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5 million in the summer of 2025. While Diaz was initially successful in the Bundesliga, his recent form has slowed to one goal and no assists in six appearances.

Additionally, new signing Jeremy Jacquet has received high praise from German player Florian Wirtz. Jacquet has integrated seamlessly into the Liverpool defense alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Wirtz describing the Frenchman as a ‘top, top’ player during a recent promotional event.
