Livestock disease outbreaks reported in Gorj and Harghita counties

Romania is facing separate livestock health concerns in the Gorj and Harghita counties. In Gorj, an outbreak of sheep and goat pox has sparked local protests in the Runcu commune. MP Ionelia Priescu has demanded that the Gorj Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate (DSV) provide official analysis documents to prove the animals are infected, following claims from local farmers that documentation was withheld during inspections.

In Harghita county, authorities have confirmed two cases of rabies in cattle near Tomești. Following positive test results from laboratories in Sfântu Gheorghe and Bucharest, veterinary officials have established a three-kilometer protection zone and a seven-kilometer surveillance zone. Measures include restricting animal movement, vaccinating receptive species, and monitoring local dogs and cats. Authorities are also investigating three additional suspected cases of rabies in the region.
