Livestock producers in Paraguay and Argentina face weather-driven logistical risks

Livestock producers in Paraguay and Argentina are facing logistical and sanitary challenges due to heavy rainfall and shifting weather patterns.

In Alto Paraguay, the cattle sector is recovering from months of difficulty caused by rising waters and heavy rains that rendered roads impassable. Nevercindo Cordeiro, president of the Regional Alto Paraguay of the Asociación Rural del Paraguay (ARP), warned that the potential arrival of the El Niño phenomenon could once again paralyze regional logistics. He noted that previous flooding caused trucks to become stuck for weeks, and while conditions have temporarily improved, inadequate secondary infrastructure remains a major vulnerability.

In Argentina, producers in Entre Ríos are responding to rising river levels in the Uruguay River and excessive rainfall. José Ignacio Colombatto, vice president of Confederaciones Rurales Argentinas (CRA), stated that many producers are preemptively moving cattle from low-lying delta areas to safer ground. This movement has triggered increased sanitary controls to prevent the spread of ticks from infested areas to previously clear establishments.
