Livorno educators appeal to protect Via Goito Urban Gardens
Educators and residents in Livorno have issued an open letter calling for the protection of the Via Goito Urban Gardens. The group expresses deep concern that the 61,000 square meter area may be dismantled following its purchase by private entities, which could lead to construction and development on the site.
Over the past 14 years, informal groups of citizens have transformed the area from a neglected site into a biodiversity island and a climate refuge. The advocates describe the space as a vital green lung and one of the few permeable areas in the city, serving as a model for democratic management of a common good.
The letter urges Mayor Luca Salvetti and the local administration to suspend any irreversible interventions and seek alternative solutions to preserve the site. A demonstration organized by the Urban Gardens Committee is scheduled for September 5 at 4:00 PM, starting from via Goito.
