Livorno urban garden eviction protests

Residents and activist collectives in Livorno are mobilizing to defend the Orti Urbani di Via Goito, a 6-hectare urban garden area occupied since 2013. The space faces an eviction order following the sale of the land to a local construction company, Frangerini. Local groups argue the gardens provide essential ecological services and oppose the proposed construction, which they characterize as “speculative cementification.”

In an open letter to Mayor Luca Salvetti, educators and residents urged the administration to suspend any irreversible interventions, describing the 61,000 square meter site as a “vital green lung,” a “biodiversity island,” and a model for the democratic management of a common good.

Mayor Salvetti has noted that following the auction to Frangerini, 80% of the site must be designated as public space and handed over to the Municipality by early November. The Mayor stated that the planned construction of four new buildings would occupy approximately 1,125 square meters, or 1.83% of the total area.

On September 4, approximately 2,000 people participated in a large-scale peaceful demonstration organized by the Comitato Orti Urbani. The march, which included activists from cities such as Rome, Turin, and Bologna, moved from the garden area to Piazza del Municipio. Protesters used slogans such as “United against the single party of bricks” to oppose land consumption.

The dispute has entered the political arena, with the Lega party criticizing the Livorno administration. Local Lega representatives Carlo Ghiozzi and Michele Gasparri argued that the ability to build in the area is a direct result of the “Piano Operativo” approved by the Salvetti administration, suggesting that critics are raising scandals regarding a plan that was previously discussed and approved.
