Taormina wildfire brought under control amid suspected arson investigation

A large wildfire in Taormina, Sicily, has been brought under control following a period of intense emergency operations. The blaze threatened residential areas, including the Zappulla district, and impacted critical infrastructure, such as a municipal water reservoir in the Tirone area and access routes near the A18 motorway.

Emergency response efforts involved multiple fire brigades, the Carabinieri, State Police, the Navy, and Civil Protection, supported by Canadair aircraft and Erickson S64 and Falco helicopters. While the fire is now in the recovery and containment phase, Taormina Mayor Cateno De Luca has indicated that the fire was likely arson and has called for a full investigation into its causes.

In a separate series of incidents in Pesaro, authorities have identified several individuals responsible for a wave of vandalism and vehicle theft occurring between August 28 and August 31. The suspects, including both adults and minors, were identified through municipal video surveillance following the damage of advertising panels and the theft of scooters and a car.
