Livorno building safety and risk prevention
Overview
Following the death of a woman on August 14 due to a terrace collapse on via Bonomo, authorities in Livorno have initiated several safety measures to address structural risks.
In the immediate aftermath, building administrators began deploying safety barriers and protective sheeting across various locations, including via Grande, Corso Mazzini, and the Palazzo delle Poste, to prevent accidents from falling plaster or crumbling facades.
To address long-term prevention, Prefect Giancarlo Dionisi established a permanent technical group. This group, which includes representatives from the Municipality, Province of Livorno, Fire Brigade, and the Tuscany Region’s Civil Engineering department, is tasked with developing a model for the progressive mapping of high-risk buildings. The initiative includes a review of all reported incidents since January 1, 2021, and a specific focus on inspecting school buildings to identify structural vulnerabilities.
