Italy's summer 2026 tourism surge drives €43 billion spend

Rising living costs have pushed Italian families toward staycations, prompting higher demand for home‑leisure products such as garden furniture, inflatable pools and portable projectors. At the same time, the habit of splitting holidays into several short trips is gaining momentum, with 69 % of Italians planning at least one micro‑vacation during the summer.

According to surveys by Tecnè for Federalberghi and Confturismo‑Confcommercio, 36.2 million Italians will travel between June and September 2026, with an average spend of €917 per main vacation and an overall market size of about €43 billion. About 28.9 % of travellers expect to make additional trips, and August alone will see a peak of 17.5 million holidaymakers.

A separate analysis by the Consumerismo Observatory estimates that a single day at the beach costs between €78 and €225 depending on whether visitors use a public beach or a private resort. Meanwhile, roughly 40 million Italians who stay at home during August generate more than €11 billion in local consumption, sustaining neighbourhood shops and services.

The Italian coast also remains a favored destination for high‑end tourism, with celebrities and VIPs spending their summer holidays on islands such as Capri, Sicily and Sardinia, underscoring the sector’s broad economic reach.
