Livorno officials defend Arabic language courses for police

The Livorno City Council has defended a pilot project titled ‘Comprendersi per operare meglio’ (Understanding each other to operate better), which offers basic Arabic language training to law enforcement officers on a voluntary basis.

Local officials responded to criticism from right-wing political parties and unions, characterizing the opposition as ideological. The administration argued that linguistic skills allow officers to grasp key words and understand conversations in critical contexts, a practice they claim is useful for monitoring and countering radicalism.

City officials noted that such specialized linguistic training mirrors methods used by military and intelligence units in international scenarios. They further stated that similar programs are already implemented by various municipalities and provinces across Italy.
