Livorno police Arabic language pilot project controversy

Overview

A pilot project in Livorno titled ‘Comprendersi per operare meglio’ (Understanding each other to operate better) was launched to provide law enforcement officers with basic Arabic language and cultural tools. The initiative, supported by local police unions, the municipal city security manager, and the local Muslim community, aims to improve communication during emergencies and routine activities.

The project faced immediate pushback from the Prefect of Livorno, Giancarlo Dionisi, who stated the initiative had no endorsement from the Ministry of the Interior or the Prefecture. Dionisi emphasized that integration in Italy should focus on the Italian language and respect for national laws. The project also drew criticism from the Lega party.

In response, the Livorno City Council defended the voluntary training, characterizing opposition from right-wing parties as “ideological.” Officials argued that linguistic skills help officers understand critical conversations and assist in monitoring and countering radicalism. They noted that such training mirrors methods used by military and intelligence units and is already implemented in other Italian municipalities.
