Livorno police Arabic language pilot project sparks controversy
A pilot project in Livorno titled ‘Comprendersi per operare meglio’ (Understanding each other to operate better) aims to provide law enforcement officers with basic Arabic language and cultural tools. The initiative, promoted by several police unions, the local Muslim community, and the municipal city security manager, seeks to facilitate communication during emergencies and routine service activities, such as requesting identification or understanding basic numbers.
However, the Prefect of Livorno, Giancarlo Dionisi, has distanced state authorities from the initiative. He stated that the project has received no endorsement from the Ministry of the Interior or the Prefecture and emphasized that the involvement of unions does not constitute institutional adherence. Dionisi noted that integration in Italy should be centered on the knowledge of the Italian language and respect for national laws.
The project has also drawn criticism from the Lega party.
