Livorno residents protest eviction of urban gardens

Residents and activist collectives in Livorno are mobilizing to defend the Orti Urbani di Via Goito, a 6-hectare urban garden area occupied since 2013. The space, which serves as a hub for community gathering, food self-sufficiency, and biodiversity, faces an eviction order following the sale of the land to a local construction company, Frangerini.

Local groups, including the Federazione Anarchica Livornese and various community collectives, argue that the gardens provide essential ecological services, such as maintaining hydrological safety and providing habitats for numerous animal species. They oppose the proposed construction projects, characterizing them as speculative cementification that threatens one of the city’s last vital open spaces and self-managed community laboratories.
