Lleida expands temporary shelter for agricultural workers
The Lleida city council, with funding from the Generalitat, will open Pavilion 4 at the Fira de Lleida to accommodate up to 160 seasonal agricultural workers without shelter. The facility will operate from 3 August to 17 August, providing beds, washrooms, security, cleaning, and professional social‑service support.
The measure responds to a sharp rise in demand during the current harvest campaign, which saw nightly concentrations of around 240 people at its peak, compared with roughly 1,000 served in previous campaigns. The new pavilion complements existing spaces – Pavilion 3 (108 places) and the CAT‑1 unit (32 places) – and includes meal kits for dinner and breakfast.
Council member Carlos Enjuanes described the expansion as an emergency response aimed at ensuring dignified care and public safety for the growing number of temporary workers seeking employment in the region.
