Lloyd’s Register and partners launch LNG emissions monitoring trial

Lloyd’s Register, Seapeak, Kongsberg Maritime, and Tunable have launched a joint development project to validate continuous emissions measurement technology on a new LNG carrier. Announced at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, the initiative aims to independently verify the accuracy of Kongsberg Maritime’s Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), which utilizes Tunable’s gas analysis technology.

The project will compare actual CO2 emissions recorded by the vessel’s CEMS against engine test bed data and default emissions factors. This process is intended to quantify differences and assess how direct CO2 measurement aligns with International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union (EU) emissions reporting frameworks.

Lloyd’s Register will serve as the independent verifier for the data collected from a new LNG carrier scheduled for delivery in early 2027. The collaboration seeks to provide reliable evidence on the performance of monitoring technologies under real operating conditions, ultimately increasing confidence in emissions data for shipowners, charterers, and regulators.
