Lobito Corridor: Angola and DRC sign railway rehabilitation contract
Presidents João Lourenço of Angola and Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have signed a contract to rehabilitate the Benguela Railway, a critical component of the Lobito Corridor. The agreement aims to modernize and maintain over 1,000 kilometers of track in the DRC for a period of 30 years.
Mota-Engil África has been awarded the project, with an expected total investment of approximately $1.8 billion. The Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) consortium, which includes Mota-Engil, Trafigura, and Vecturis, previously announced a $753 million financing agreement to support the corridor's development.
The project is designed to facilitate the transport of strategic minerals, such as copper and cobalt, from the DRC to the Atlantic port of Lobito. Beyond mineral logistics, President Tshisekedi emphasized that the corridor will support agricultural and industrial transformation, creating jobs and developing local skills. The infrastructure is expected to increase transport capacity tenfold and reduce mineral transport costs by roughly 30%.
