Local councils navigate economic and community development strategies
The Waipa District Council is shelving its own draft economic wellbeing strategy in favor of aligning with the Waikato Regional Economic Development Strategy. This decision has met resistance from several councillors who expressed concerns regarding the use of resources on policy documents rather than tangible local results. Councillors argued that the shift might overlook specific district priorities and prevent local businesses from having a direct say in a strategy tailored to their immediate needs.
In a separate development, the Wellington Shire Council has launched the ‘Thriving Wellington’ initiative, inviting public input on three long-term strategies: Economic Development (2027-2037), Arts, Culture and Leisure (2027-2037), and Community Infrastructure. The council is seeking feedback from residents and businesses to guide planning and investment over the next decade, focusing on topics such as tourism, local jobs, and the use of community spaces.
