Local government strategic planning initiatives

Overview

Local government authorities in various regions are implementing new strategic frameworks to manage long-term growth and economic development.

In Wrexham, the County Council has established a timeline to develop a new local plan following previous legal disputes. The process includes reviewing evidence, calling for sites, and conducting public consultations through 2029, with the goal of formal adoption by October 2030. Similarly, the Lismore City Council in Australia has adopted a Strategic Planning Framework focused on resilience, rural land use, and biodiversity to address long-term growth trends.

In New Zealand, the Waipa District Council has decided to align its economic wellbeing strategy with the Waikato Regional Economic Development Strategy, despite some councillor opposition regarding the potential loss of district-specific priorities. Meanwhile, the Wellington Shire Council has launched the ‘Thriving Wellington’ initiative, seeking public feedback on decade-long strategies for economic development, arts, culture, and community infrastructure.
