Latin American nations implement water management and climate adaptation strategies

Various Latin American regions are implementing diverse strategies to manage water resources and climate risks. In Chile, the first Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Water Resources has been established. Paraguay is incorporating indigenous perspectives into its National Water Resources Plan.

In Colombia, Barranquilla is advancing a ‘Minimum Vital Water and Basic Sanitation’ project. Proposed by Mayor Alejandro Char, the initiative aims to subsidize the first six cubic meters of monthly water consumption for vulnerable households in strata 1, 2, and potentially 3, benefiting approximately 200,244 residents.

Infrastructure and maintenance efforts are also underway in Argentina and Uruguay. In Salto, Uruguay, authorities are cleaning and canalizing streams and ravines to improve drainage and prevent flooding during heavy rains. In Argentina, El Sauzalito is finalizing sewage and drainage works to mitigate flood risks associated with El Niño, while Lago Posadas has agreed to clean over 17 kilometers of public irrigation systems.
