Lockheed Martin receives first Patriot interceptor parts from GM Defense

Lockheed Martin has received its first shipment of Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor housing components from GM Defense. The delivery of these metal castings occurred on August 28, just 22 days after the companies signed a manufacturing agreement on August 6. This rapid turnaround significantly bypasses traditional defense production cycles that often take months or years.

The partnership aims to strengthen the U.S. defense industrial base and improve supply chain resilience. The Pentagon is increasingly looking to commercial automotive manufacturers to ramp up weapons production to address strategic inventory shortfalls caused by high-intensity conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and the Middle East.

To meet rising demand, Lockheed Martin plans to invest between $8 billion and $9 billion across more than 20 domestic facilities. This expansion is intended to increase munitions manufacturing and storage capacity by nearly 50%, with specific investments targeting facilities in Camden, Arkansas, and Troy, Alabama. The Pentagon has requested that Lockheed Martin more than triple its production of Patriot missiles, aiming for a rate of over 2,000 interceptors per year by the end of 2030.
