Lockheed Martin to accelerate AIM-260 missile production

Lockheed Martin has entered into a framework agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate the production of the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM). This next-generation air-to-air missile was developed under high secrecy to counter long-range aerial threats, specifically targeting capabilities like those of the Chinese J-20 fighter jet.

The agreement is designed to expand the defense industrial base by allowing Lockheed Martin to invest in manufacturing capacity, workforce, and production efficiencies. This move aims to prepare for potential multiyear procurement contracts and to replenish U.S. munitions stockpiles.

The AIM-260 is intended for use on stealth platforms, including the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Australia has already signaled its interest in the program, announcing an intention to acquire the missiles for approximately $521 million to be integrated into its F/A-18F Super Hornet, F-35A, and EA-18G Growler fleets.
