Logistics association warns against new truck tolls in Burgenland

The Central Association of Freight Forwarding and Logistics (ZV) has expressed strong opposition to planned truck tolls on state roads in Burgenland, Austria, scheduled to begin in 2027. The association warns that these additional regional tolls could create a “patchwork of tolls” across the country, increasing administrative burdens and costs for transport companies.

ZV President Alexander Friesz stated that the logistics industry already bears a disproportionate share of road financing, noting that heavy goods vehicles contribute significantly more to toll revenues than passenger cars. He described the move as “an affront and the completely wrong signal for the business location” during economically difficult times.

The association emphasizes that road freight is essential for rural supply chains, including food, industry, and agriculture, where rail alternatives are often not viable for the “last mile.” ZV Managing Director Oliver Wagner expressed concern that other federal states might follow Burgenland’s lead, potentially fragmenting Austria into nine different regional toll systems. The ZV is calling for a transparent assessment of the economic, traffic, and legal consequences before further implementation.
