Lombardy alpine huts vandalized; authorities launch coordinated cleanup

In the Lombardy region of northern Italy, the historic Bivacco Ferrario shelter on the Grignetta summit was defaced with graffiti and stickers, prompting a wave of volunteer clean‑up efforts a week after the incident. The local section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) in Lecco thanked those who removed the vandalism and announced plans for a coordinated operation to fully restore the structure, including the removal of remaining adhesive tags.

Additional incidents were reported nearby, including teenagers climbing onto the roof of the Magnodeno hut by Lake Como and urinating on its solar panels, as well as graffiti on a monument at Monte Moschin near Vicenza. Giacomo Zamperini, chair of the Lombardy regional mountain commission, condemned the acts, emphasizing that mountain huts are safety installations and symbols of alpine culture that must be respected. He reiterated the region’s 2024 amendment requiring hikers to plan responsibly, respect signage, and protect the environment.
