Italy faces expanding wave of public‑asset vandalism
Entities: Monte Magnodeno · Grignetta · Giacomo Zamperini · Lake Como · Lombardy
Overview
Since late June 2026, a nocturnal wave of vandalism has swept Italian municipalities, damaging schools, sports facilities, murals, benches, signage and coastal infrastructure. Mayors have filed complaints, ordered repairs and called on residents to protect public property while investigations continue.
Incidents on 23 July hit Tuscany and the Adriatic coast: a newly installed marble bench in Gavorrano was ripped from its base; an information sign in Pineto was defaced and later cleaned by a local volunteer; a city‑centre gallery in Imola was vandalised, prompting merchants to demand more police patrols and street‑light repairs; a lifeguard tower on the Torvajanica coast was shattered and its equipment stolen. The same day, unrelated street‑crime cases were reported in Caserta, Viareggio and Verona, and a severe hailstorm damaged assets in Marche.
On 24 July the wave reached the Lombardy Alps. Graffiti and stickers marred the historic Bivacco Ferrario shelter on Grignetta; teenagers urinated on the solar panels of the Magnodeno hut near Lake Como; and graffiti appeared on a monument at Monte Moschin. Regional authorities condemned the acts and called for stricter respect of mountain signage.
On 28 July Lombardy’s Mountain Commission president Giacomo Zamperini denounced the repeated tourist vandalism at the Magnodeno bivouac and a hut on Grignetta, where groups in flip‑flops sprayed pro‑Palestinian slogans and damaged solar installations. He thanked volunteers for cleaning, urged visitors to behave responsibly and noted similar misconduct in the German Alps, framing the incidents as a broader problem of irresponsible Alpine tourism.
