Lombardy diesel ban: Matteo Salvini requests extension
Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini has requested an extension to the upcoming ban on Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the Lombardy region. The restriction, scheduled to take effect on October 1, threatens to impact approximately 500,000 residents who rely on these vehicles for daily transport.
Speaking at a conference in Milan, Salvini argued against the ban, stating it would be unwise to penalize citizens who cannot afford to purchase new cars or vans. He noted that the geographic layout of the region, situated between the Alps and the Apennines, makes air circulation more difficult than in other areas. While similar bans have been averted in Piedmont and are unlikely to proceed in Veneto, the restrictions remain active in Lombardy and are uncertain in Emilia-Romagna. The measure specifically targets cities with populations of at least 100,000 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
