Lombardy Governor Fontana decries limited police deployment in region

Governor Attilio Fontana of Lombardy has criticised the central government for assigning only about 180 police officers to the region, far below the numbers he says are needed for its population and security demands. Fontana argues that, based on population, the region should receive at least 500 agents.

The Interior Ministry announced a hiring programme of 3,000 new officers for Italy, but only a small share – roughly 6 % – is earmarked for Lombardy, which accounts for 17 % of the national population and 23 % of GDP. Fontana and opposition leaders accuse the government of undervaluing the security needs of the productive North, describing the allocation as a political slight.

Minister Matteo Piantedosi’s recent visits to southern locations have drawn further criticism, with the Lombardy delegation saying the region’s strategic importance warrants a larger share of the new forces. The dispute reflects broader tensions between the regional administration and the national government over public‑security resources.
