Lombardy rolls out transport reforms: fare hike, lake boat licences, rail crossing upgrades

The Lombardy regional government has announced a series of transport‑related measures. Effective 1 September 2026, regional rail tickets will rise by 3.889 %, a change opposed by the Italian Socialist Party (PSI) in Cremona and criticised by the Green Europe party, which argues that commuters are being asked to pay for hydrogen‑train projects.

In the province of Lecco, the region approved an increase of NCC (boat) licences on Lake Como from 18 to 33, adding fifteen new authorisations that will be allocated to Mandello del Lario (4), Colico (3), Oliveto Lario (3), Lecco (2), Perledo (2) and Bellano (1). The move aims to meet growing tourist demand and improve lake‑based mobility.

Separately, Lombardy and the state railway infrastructure firm RFI have committed roughly €57 million to eliminate twelve level‑crossings in the Varese province. The funding combines €21.84 million from the regional government with €14.91 million from RFI and will replace the crossings with underpasses, overpasses and cycle‑pedestrian routes, enhancing safety and traffic flow.
