Lombardy infrastructure works cause rail and highway disruptions
Major transportation disruptions are expected in the Lombardy region due to scheduled maintenance on rail and highway networks.
Trenord has announced significant changes to train schedules affecting the Saronno hub due to maintenance work at the Novate Milanese station. These changes, effective from October 12 through October 24, 2026, will impact several lines, including the S3 Saronno-Milano Cadorna route. Commuters can expect arrival delays of 5 to 7 minutes on the S3 line, as well as total cancellations of specific trains (R 895, 897, 888, 890, and 892). Other lines connecting Como, Varese, and Novara to Milano Cadorna will also experience delays ranging from 4 to 11 minutes.
Simultaneously, nighttime closures are scheduled for the A8 and A9 motorways between October 13 and October 17. Maintenance work will affect the Milano-Varese and Lainate-Como-Chiasso routes, including the closure of the Villoresi Ovest service area and sections between Castellanza and Fiera Milano. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes, such as the SS527 and SS33, or exit at Saronno to bypass affected motorway junctions.
