Lombardy introduces new mushroom foraging regulations

Authorities in Lombardy and the city of Crema are issuing warnings regarding an abnormal proliferation of poisonous and toxic mushrooms. In Crema, residents are urged to exercise caution during foraging and are reminded that the ATS provides a free service to inspect collected mushrooms for toxicity.

To address safety and environmental concerns, the Lombardy Region is introducing new regulations for mushroom and truffle foraging. The proposed measures include a daily collection limit of three kilograms per person. While foraging remains free for most, exceptions apply to those over 75. The new rules aim to protect forest biodiversity and allow mountain communities to implement fees for trail maintenance, fire prevention, and environmental monitoring.

Data from the ATS highlights the necessity of these measures, noting that nearly one ton of poisonous mushrooms was destroyed in Lombardy over the last two years. The agency also reported 160 poisoning episodes during that period, resulting in numerous hospitalizations.
