Lombardy requests state of emergency after severe storms
Severe weather across Northern Italy has prompted the Lombardy Region to formally request a national state of emergency from the Italian government. The storms, which caused significant damage on August 20, resulted in landslides, flooding, and soil movements, particularly affecting the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Sondrio, Como, and Lecco. In the Valle Camonica area, debris flows impacted the Oglio river. Approximately 440 people were evacuated, including 250 guests from a campsite in Isola di Fondra.
The province of Varese experienced intense localized impacts, including a downburst that caused heavy rainfall in Cassano Magnago. Firefighters have conducted over 190 interventions across Lombardy, primarily addressing fallen trees, water damage, and structural instabilities. Malpensa Airport also faced significant disruptions, with 13 incoming and 13 outgoing flights cancelled due to flooding and high winds.
In Tuscany, President Eugenio Giani indicated he would propose a state of emergency for approximately 15 to 20 municipalities that suffered localized damage from recent storms, noting that the impact was scattered rather than concentrated in a single area.
