Lombardy requests state of emergency after severe weather
Lombardy President Attilio Fontana has requested a state of emergency from the Italian government following severe weather that has caused widespread damage across the region. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has reportedly guaranteed that the request will be submitted to the Council of Ministers as soon as possible.
The extreme weather brought exceptional rainfall, with accumulations reaching 270 mm in the Orobie Alps and 260 mm near Lake Como. Emergency services, including the fire brigade, have conducted over 450 interventions. Significant incidents include the collapse of a bridge connecting Rino to Sonico in the province of Brescia and the evacuation of approximately 250 people from a campsite in Isola di Fondra, Bergamo.
Landslides, mudslides, and flooding have also impacted Valtellina, Valchiavenna, and the Como area. Regional authorities are currently working to secure affected areas, restore infrastructure, and conduct a detailed assessment of the damages to ensure necessary support for the impacted communities.
