Severe flooding and storms in Italy
Overview
Severe weather and extreme rainfall have caused significant flooding and infrastructure damage across multiple Italian regions.
In Liguria, intense rainfall described by authorities as a “water bomb” struck towns such as Chiavari and Lavagna. In Chiavari, reports indicate that over 100 mm of rain fell within a single hour, flooding streets, basements, and garages while causing power outages. Emergency services were required to rescue individuals trapped in vehicles within flooded underpasses. Recent data shows Chiavari recorded 126 mm of rain within a two-hour period.
In Lombardy, the situation escalated with rainfall accumulations reaching 270 mm in the Orobie Alps and 260 mm near Lake Como. The weather triggered landslides, mudslides, and the collapse of a bridge in the province of Brescia. Following over 450 emergency interventions and the evacuation of approximately 250 people from a campsite in Bergamo, Lombardy President Attilio Fontana requested a state of emergency from the Italian government.
Additional storm damage has been reported in Spilimbergo, where a tree fell on a vehicle, causing injuries, and in Tuscany, where thousands of residents were left without power.
