London to begin pedestrianisation of Oxford Street

Starting 26 October 2026, a 0.7-mile stretch of Oxford Street between Oxford Circus and Marble Arch stations will be closed to most vehicular traffic. The project, approved by the Mayor of London and Transport for London, aims to transform the busy thoroughfare into a pedestrian-focused zone to improve public health, safety, and accessibility.

The ban will include cars, lorries, vans, taxis, buses, bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters, with exceptions made only for emergency vehicles. The initiative follows years of campaigning by groups like Living Streets to combat high levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution and reduce road dangers in the area.

Proponents suggest the move will boost the local economy and improve the visitor experience. A trial closure in September 2025 reportedly saw footfall increase by 45 per cent, with a majority of visitors reporting feeling safer and having a more positive perception of the street.
