Oxford Street pedestrianization project

Overview

The pedestrianization of a one-kilometer section of London’s Oxford Street officially commenced on Monday, October 26, 2026. The restricted zone spans from Orchard Street, near Selfridges, to Great Portland Street, encompassing the Oxford Circus intersection.

Under the new regulations, cars, buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedicabs are prohibited from the central section. While emergency services maintain access, commercial deliveries are restricted to the hours between midnight and 7:00 am. Several north-south junctions remain open to allow vehicles to cross the street.

Mayor Sadiq Khan stated the initiative aims to reverse retail decline by replacing “dross” such as souvenir shops with high-quality flagship stores. He described the launch as a “truly momentous occasion for the capital,” noting the project aims to boost economic growth, create a greener environment, and allow the street to host cultural and sporting events. The district, which attracts approximately 500,000 daily visitors and generates £3.1 billion in annual spend, is undergoing this transformation to create a “world-class pedestrian destination” comparable to New York’s Times Square or Paris’ Champs-Élysées.

Following the busy Christmas period, the project will enter a further phase by the end of spring. Planned improvements include the installation of 50 new trees, over 100 seats, two public squares, and improved signage. The total transformation is expected to cost approximately £150 million. Despite the project's goals, Westminster City Council and some local groups have maintained concerns regarding the potential diversion of traffic onto surrounding side roads and accessibility for disabled residents.
