Brazil reports measles cases in Amazonas and São Paulo
Brazil is experiencing localized measles outbreaks in the states of Amazonas and São Paulo. In Amazonas, health authorities confirmed three cases in Tabatinga, a municipality located in the triple border region with Peru and Colombia. The confirmed patients are of Peruvian nationality and were unvaccinated. Authorities are investigating additional suspected cases in Tabatinga and Carauari, while the Ministry of Health intensifies surveillance and vaccination efforts in these border areas.
In the state of São Paulo, the number of confirmed measles cases in 2026 has reached 32. The majority of these cases, 29, are located in the capital city, with others reported in Guarulhos and São Bernardo do Campo. Many of the infected individuals had incomplete or no vaccination records. In response, health departments have implemented vaccination campaigns, including the administration of a ‘dose zero’ for infants in high-risk districts of the capital, and have seen significant increases in immunization rates in cities like Campinas.
While Brazil remains certified as an area free of sustained measles transmission, health officials warn that imported cases from outbreaks in other American countries pose a risk of starting new transmission chains. The triple viral vaccine remains the primary tool for prevention and is available through the Unified Health System (SUS).
