Londrina transit authority studies bus line reductions to cut costs

The Companhia Municipal de Trânsito e Urbanização (CMTU) is evaluating changes to Londrina’s public transport system to reduce operational costs. The municipality is facing a projected deficit of R$ 205 million this year, prompting a plan to contain expenses.

Proposed measures include restructuring approximately 25 bus lines that currently show low passenger demand. This restructuring could involve adjusting routes, stops, and trip intervals, as well as reducing the number of buses on specific paths.

CMTU President Renan Salvador noted that the current public transport subsidy is a significant burden on municipal accounts. The city intends to limit subsidies to R$ 100 million by December, with a long-term goal of reducing that figure to R$ 50 million by 2027. Discussions with the private companies operating the system are ongoing to determine the final impact on service.

Separately, CMTU has completed the installation of new speed monitoring radars in Londrina. These devices use updated technology and are part of an effort to improve traffic safety. While the locations have undergone some partial changes, the total number of devices remains the same as previous equipment.
