Long Beach activates automated speed enforcement pilot program
Long Beach has launched its Speed Safety System, an automated speed enforcement pilot program authorized by California Assembly Bill 645. The system utilizes 18 speed-detection devices placed in high-risk areas, including corridors with high injury rates, locations with documented street racing, and school zones.
The program has entered a 60-day warning period that runs through December 7. During this time, drivers will be notified of the system's presence via signage. The cameras capture images of rear license plates when a vehicle travels at least 11 mph above the posted speed limit. Following the warning period, drivers traveling 11 to 15 mph over the limit will receive a warning, while second and subsequent offenses will result in civil citations and fines.
City officials stated that the citations are civil rather than criminal and will not add points to a driver's license or affect driving records. The system does not use facial recognition or continuous video recording. Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized that the initiative aims to change dangerous driving behavior and prevent traffic fatalities.
