Long Beach driver arrested in fatal hit-and-run involving wheelchair user

A man in a wheelchair was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach early Friday morning. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the victim was traveling eastbound in a marked crosswalk at East 7th Street when he was struck by a southbound white BMW sedan.

Police stated that the BMW came to a stop before fleeing the scene without rendering aid. Responding officers performed CPR until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities apprehended the driver, identified as 23-year-old Ethan Chung of Irvine, a few blocks away at East 2nd Street and Pacific Coast Highway. Chung was booked into the Long Beach City Jail on $50,000 bail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. While the investigation is ongoing, police noted that speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the collision.
