Malaysia coordinates DNA efforts for Nepal disaster victims
Malaysia is coordinating efforts to identify 55 citizens still missing following devastating floods and landslides in Nepal. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated that Malaysia has requested DNA samples from Nepalese authorities to be sent to Kuala Lumpur for matching, as Nepal currently lacks the necessary facilities for comprehensive DNA testing.
As the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) prepares to return home, the team will leave its drones in Nepal to assist local rescue efforts. The Malaysian government is also negotiating a legal mechanism with Nepal to expedite insurance and death claims, addressing the discrepancy between Nepal's three-year requirement and Malaysia's seven-year requirement for issuing death certificates for missing persons.
Separately, in Sarawak, the remains of five victims from an Air Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter crash in Long Lellang are being returned to their families. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed that identities were verified through DNA analysis by the Royal Malaysia Police and the Department of Chemistry Malaysia. The Ministry of Health is coordinating the transport of the deceased to their respective burial sites across Malaysia.
