Overview

The humanitarian crisis in the mountainous border regions of Nepal and Tibet has intensified following a glacial collapse and debris flow on August 26, 2026. Officials have described the disaster as a “Himalayan tsunami,” which caused massive devastation across the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dharing districts, destroying bridges, roads, and at least thirteen hydropower projects. By early September, the death toll was reported at at least 1,384, while more than 5,500 people remain missing across both sides of the border. The missing include hundreds of foreign nationals, including 36 Australians, 275 Indians, and 55 Malaysians.

Search and rescue operations involve over 21,000 security personnel and up to 25 helicopters operating daily. International relief efforts have intensified, with India providing emergency materials and forensic teams, and Dubai Humanitarian coordinating an airlift of critical supplies for UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and the Red Cross.

Efforts to locate and identify the 55 missing Malaysians have become increasingly complex. The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) has concluded its field deployment in Nepal, having conducted ground searches and aerial drone surveillance. To support local efforts, the team provided drone operation training to Nepalese rescuers and donated nine drones to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) is working to establish the status of the missing individuals, noting that mobile phone pings for some have been identified in heavily affected zones. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has requested that DNA samples from Nepal be sent to Kuala Lumpur for matching due to a lack of specialized equipment in Nepal. Additionally, the Malaysian government is negotiating legal mechanisms with Nepal to resolve discrepancies regarding the timelines required for issuing death certificates—specifically Nepal’s three-year requirement—to expedite insurance and death claims.
