Nepal and Tibet flash floods: rising casualties and missing

Overview

The humanitarian crisis following devastating flash floods and landslides in the mountainous border regions of Nepal and Tibet has escalated significantly. As of late August 2026, death tolls are reported between 579 and 584, with an estimated 1,924 to 2,482 people missing. The disaster has heavily impacted the Trishuli and Nuwakot districts, destroying over 40 bridges and 40km of roads.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) estimates that approximately 93,000 people require urgent assistance. Among the missing are between 517 and 537 foreigners from over 30 countries. Search and rescue operations, led by the Nepal Army and supported by the UN, face obstacles including thick mud, destroyed communication networks, and the risk of overflowing natural lakes.

Regarding Malaysian citizens, the government is working to verify the status of approximately 57 citizens reported missing. Malaysia continues to coordinate aid and considers deploying its Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team (SMART) and military personnel.

Efforts to assist Indian citizens from Maharashtra continue. While 110 citizens from Nagpur were confirmed safe in Kathmandu and a group of 37 pilgrims from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra departed toward Kathmandu via the Nyalam check-post, preliminary reports indicate approximately 80 citizens from Maharashtra were stranded. The Maharashtra government has established helplines and a dedicated web portal to track travelers amidst collapsed mobile networks.
