Nepal and Tibet floods: death toll rises and survivor found

Overview

The humanitarian crisis in the mountainous border regions of Nepal and Tibet has intensified following a glacial collapse and debris flow on August 26, 2026. Officials described the disaster as a “Himalayan tsunami,” causing massive devastation across the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dharing districts. By early September, the death toll reached at least 1,384, with over 5,500 people missing across both sides of the border.

Efforts to locate 54 missing Malaysian citizens continue. While Nepal has officially ended its search and rescue operations, the Malaysia Solidarity Families in Hope (MASFIH) is calling for continued diplomatic efforts through both Nepal and China to find certainty regarding the missing individuals. To assist in identification, MASFIH has recommended the submission of 20 additional DNA samples to Chinese authorities to complete a set of 23 samples for a specific group of travelers.

Furthermore, the group is requesting that the Malaysian government leverage diplomatic ties with China to provide families with digital access to a catalog of personal belongings found at Gyirong Port. This would allow relatives to identify items belonging to their loved ones.

As the ordeal progresses, families have expressed growing emotional and financial distress. Previously, the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) concluded its deployment on September 14, having conducted ground and aerial searches. On October 2, a Chinese-Malaysian tourist returned home safely after being missing for 37 days, leaving 54 Malaysians still unaccounted for. In response to the catastrophe, the World Bank has provided an emergency funding package of up to $170 million to Nepal.
